A short history
The place was first called Bonbon, a Palawano word for locality. American scouts later named it after James Brooke, the British rajah of Sarawak, and local officials have since asked for the old name to be restored. The first recorded municipal president was Datu Pula.
In 1934 the Pearl of Lao Tzu, long described as the largest pearl in the world, was found in the waters off the town.
